의미: others other는 주로 형용사로서 「다른」, 대명사로서 「다른 사람, 다른 것」의 뜻으로 쓴다.
형용사로서 other는 단독으로 단수 명사를 수식하는 일은 없고, 반드시 앞에 one, any, some, no 등을 동반한다. ★ 유의어인 another는 단독으로 수식이 가능함:in some other city(어딘가 다른 도시에서) 《in another city(다른 도시에서) 반면에 another는 복수 명사를 수식하지 못하고 대신에 other를 씀》 ‘the other ...’는 형용사로서 기본적으로 「(둘 중의) 다른 하나의」란 뜻인데, 복수 명사를 수식하면 「나머지 모두의」란 뜻이 된다:the other three(나머지 셋) 그런데 대명사로서의 ‘the other’는 둘 중의 하나(one)에 대하여 「다른 하나」란 단수의 뜻이고 복수는 ‘the others’이다.
