의미: soonest soon〔OE 「곧」의 뜻에서〕 ad.

1 곧, 이내, 잠시 후, 머지않아
▶ He will come soon. 그는 곧 올 게다.
▶ She left soon after ten. 그녀는 10시 좀 지나 집을 나섰다.
[유의어] soon 얼마 안 있어 presently soon과 같은 뜻이지만 좀 딱딱한 말이다:They will be here presently. 그들은 곧 이리 올 것이다. shortly soon이나 presently보다 시간이 짧음을 나타낸다:shortly after his arrival in Seoul 서울에 도착하여 곧 immediately 시간적인 간격을 두지 않고 지금 곧:come home immediately 곧 바로 귀가하다


2 (예정보다) 일찍, 일찌감치(⇒early [유의어])
▶ You needn’t leave so soon. 그렇게 일찍 떠날 필요가 없어.
▶ You spoke too soon. 말이 좀 빨랐어.

3 빨리, 수월하게, 얼른
▶ I want to be out of here the soonest I can. 가능한 빨리 이 곳을 나가고 싶다.

4 기꺼이, 자진하여, 차라리
as[so] soon as …하자마자
as soon ... (as ...) (…하기 보다) 오히려:He could as soon write an epic as drive a car. 그가 자동차 운전을 할 줄 안다면 서사시를 쓰겠다. 《운전은 어림도 없다》
as soon as not 오히려 기꺼이
as soon as possible[maybe] 될 수 있는 대로 빨리, 한시 바삐
