의미: first first는 적어도 네 가지 다른 의미를 가지고 있다. first가 지니는 각 뜻이 어떤 어구와 상대적으로 대조되어 있는가를 생각해 보면 뜻이 명백해진다.
① for the second time, for the third time 등의 계열에서 쓰이는 first는 for the first time(처음으로)의 뜻이다:When did you first see him? 그와 처음으로 만난 것은 언제냐?
② secondly, thirdly 또는 in the second place, in the third place 등과 대조적으로 쓰이는 first는 in the first place(우선, 첫째로)의 뜻이다.
③ second, third와 대조될 때의 first는 형용사적으로도 부사적으로도 「(때·순위 등에 있어서) 맨먼저의, 첫째의」의 뜻으로 일반적으로 쓰인다:the first chapter 제1장/the first month of the year 1월/first of all 제일 먼저/Which horse came in first? 어느 말이 1착을 했느냐?/Women and children first. 여자와 어린이 우선.
④ 다음으로 soon 또는 (soon) afterwards 등의 말을 예상시키는 경우, 혹은 이 말들과 대조적으로 쓰이는 경우, first는 at first의 뜻이지만, 이 용법의 first는 특히 애매하여 현재는 별로 쓰이지 않는다. 대신 at first를 쓰면 된다:I found it difficult at first, but soon got used to it. 처음에는 어렵게 생각했지만 곧 익숙해졌다.
